Iconography

In the year 2000, the grace of God led me to a teacher of this ancient art form, which is integral to the Eastern Catholic religious tradition of my family--one that I have been called to learn. It is the writing of icons, a sacred art form, which I feel blessed to have been studying now for over five years. These traditional icons are painted on wooden panels prepared with handmade gesso and painted with natural pigments and egg yolk in the ancient tradition. Madonnas

Just prior to my study of iconography which began with the Mother of God icon, a series of wonderful paintings of madonnas emerged during a very dark night of my soul. Little did I know at the time that they were the perfect prelude to the beginning of my iconography study. The elements of iconography that I learned are visible in the progression of madonnas.
